Dempsey Hill is an area located off the Tanglin region not far from Orchard Road. A former military base inherited from British colonial times, this enclave comprises mainly low-rise buildings of refurbished former army barracks housing restaurants, cafes and eateries. A smattering of antique/wood furniture shops, art galleries and specialty boutiques complete the charming draw of this rustic respite from the city's famous shopping belt.
Set amidst lush greenery and located along Holland Road opposite Singapore's Botanic Gardens, Dempsey Hill offers the more adventurous shopper and diner a different dining experience from other busy air-conditioned Singapore malls. Well maintained grassy fields, an old church, and unsheltered lanes with names like Loewen Road, Harding Road and Dempsey Road all conspire to evoke a feeling of being brought back in time to the British colonial days of half a century ago. Be warned though that the popular restaurants and drinking spots here draw in the crowds once the sun sets.
